CTE spotlight - Blue River Career Programs As we wrap up CTE month, we wanted to spotlight the career center as a whole. Blue River Career Programs is comprised of five high schools (Morristown, Triton Central, Shelbyville, Southwestern, and Waldron) where students between the grades of 10th-12th grade can attend the career center. Blue River Career Programs offers thirteen different career and technical education programs in which student may earn Ivy Tech dual credits in twelve of those programs along with students having the ability to earn industry recognized certifications in ten of our programs. Our career center has pathways for students in high school looking to attend college, a trade school, or enter the workforce once they have graduated from their home high school. Students who want to attend college after high school can earn up to 18 dual credits before they graduate, with many of those dual credits transferring to all public colleges and universities in the State of Indiana. Students who want to either attend a trade school or enter the workforce will be able to earn industry recognized certifications that will give them a leg up in when applying for jobs or entering their trade school. Blue River Career Programs is the hidden gem in Shelby County that will be a moving force for all the educational needs in the future. We look forward to partnering with our community stakeholders moving forward.

Today's CTE spotlight is our Work Based Learning program Grace McLaughlin is currently enrolled in the Work Based Learning Internship Program. Grace says, "I chose WBL, so I could gain real life experiences working with attorney and judges on real cases. It is amazing to have your classroom at the courthouse and seeing first-hand what it will be like when I become an attorney specializing in criminal law." Grace feels honored to be mentored by Jennifer Kinsley and her staff at the Shelby County Courthouse. Grace said it is all the real-life experience and knowledge she gains before and after the trials that will allow her goal to not just become an attorney but one of the best. Grace says that her competitive spirit comes from her running track which she currently holds the Morristown Cross Country school record. She says her energy and ability to motivate from her being a cheerleader at Morristown. Academically Grace is at the top of her class. She never misses class and is polite, respectful, prepared, great communicator, and willing to step hp and volunteer to help in any way needed in her WBL class. Grace says she has learned a lot from her classmates like her to get out of school to learn and gain experience you can't get in school. Grace will be continuing her goal of becoming a top-notch attorney at Butler University. Mr. Ray Schebler believes Grace will be extremely successful on her journey because of her hard work, passion, dedication, and faith. Mr. Schebler says he hopes he never needs an attorney but if he does, he hopes it is Grace McLaughlin as his attorney. Work Based Learning Internship program is designed to give seniors real life experience in the real world to make their transition from school to work. While in the classroom, students learn human relations, finance, management, customer service, time management, conflict resolution, public speaking, team building, goal setting, and topics of work.

Today's CTE spotlight is our Diesel Services program -Brayden Schultz, Shelbyville High School - Senior in Diesel Technology (AM) Brayden is willing to learn, picks up lessons quickly, willing to help others, goes that extra mile with making sure tools and the work area is cleaned prior to leaving for the day. Brayden's desire is to continue his education in Montana to play football and study Diesel Mechanic's with the wishes of taking over the family farming operation there. -Alexandro Figueroa, Shelbyville High School - Senior in Diesel Technology (PM) This is Alexandro's second year in the Diesel program, he wants to explore the diesel service as a possible career choice. Alex is willing to step in and tackle any challenge there may be in the shop with projects. Diesel Service Technology we strive to learn the fundamentals, principals in the traditional lecture classroom environment, along with the lab experience of the trade with hands on. The program will touch on brakes, electrical, transmissions, drivelines, steering, suspension, engines, fuel systems and more. Students have the opportunity to achieve benchmarks and earn 4 ASE certifications.

The Human and Social Services classes are organizing a prom drive. If you are a junior or senior eligible to go to prom at your home school and are in need of a prom dress or suit, find the QR code posted on the fliers in the hall and attached to this email. All forms need to be filled out by Friday, March 7th. The Prom Drive will take place on Thursday, March 13th! If you have a dress, suit, or shoes/accessories that you would like to donate, please contact Ms. Edwards at (aedwards@brcp.k12.in.us).

Today's CTE spotlight is BRCP alumni Jill Goodwin Jill is a 1998 graduate of Shelbyville High School. Jill attended BRCP in 1996-1997 with the Business Center and 1997-1998 through our Co-op/Work Based Learning Program. In what ways did BRCP have an impact on you? "BRCP not only provided me with an education focused on business but also introduced me to the company in which I have built my career. I had expressed interest in the Co-op/work-based learning course near the completion of the Business Center course I attended and was introduced to several companies that supported the work-based learning program at BRCP. After job shadowing and interviewing at a few of these companies, I was offered and accepted a temporary co-op position at what was then known as Standard Register. That single opportunity led to a full-time position where I was able to advance from clerical roles to management roles and eventually to my current role as Director of Operations of that same company which is now known as Taylor." What advice would you give BRCP students today? "Education is important. Continued learning beyond your formal education is even more important. Be a student of your occupation. Learn all you can about the industry, service, or field you are in and then use that knowledge to advance and succeed."

What a great turnout we had tonight for our open house! The hallways and classrooms were busy and it was awesome to see so many current and future BRCP students.

Today's CTE Spotlight is our Criminal Justice program Cassandra Pike is a first year Criminal Justice student, currently a Junior from Shelbyville High School. Last fall, she received her 40-hour IAED ETC certification. She also received 6 credit hours through Ivy Tech in Criminal Justice. This Spring, Cassandra is planning to earn her 40-hour Jail Officer's Course certificate and 6 more Ivy Tech credit hours. In class, she enjoys learning about the various court systems in the United States. Last October, Cassandra toured the Shelby County Courthouse and Community Corrections and was able to see Shelby County government in action. She also appreciated the time our various guest speakers gave, including courtroom personnel Judge David Riggins and Attorneys Scott Spears and Rebecca Gray. Some of the hands-on activities she enjoys are practicing her Use of Force and her Crime Scene Investigation skills. Cassandra plans to attend Indiana University upon graduation. She wants to earn a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in Legal Studies. She is also interested in IU's pre-law program. Her future plans include attending law school. Upon completion, she is interested in practicing Family or Criminal Law.

Tonight is our BRCP open house form 5:00 - 6:30 PM here at the career center. All current and prospective future BRCP students are welcome to attend. We will have 17 different vendors representing various trades for you to visit, along with classrooms available to view projects from each program. See you tonight.

Our CTE spotlight for today is our Construction Trades program. Our construction trades student is Scotty Jenkins of Shelbyville High School. Scotty is a junior, 1st year student and has good attendance and is polite and respectful. Scotty is always prepared, on time and looks for other students needing help or things needing done to make things operate smoothly. As a 1st yr student, he has good communication skills, understands the objective at hand and is a valuable asset to me guiding and directing others and I can always rely on him to help. If I had a business, I would hire him instantly for his qualities. Thank You Scotty Jenkins for your service to the class. The Construction Trades Class has done several projects this year starting with the students picking a 4-member team and building a doghouse from a set of Blueprints. Students used communication and team building concepts to transfer measurements to wood and cut, nail, screw and assemble their doghouse while having a friendly competition among other student teams. Next the students built an office in the Diesel Tech Lab from start to finish using knowledge learned and applied it to hands -on skills to complete the project. Students learning layout, estimating, framing, siding ,painting, drywalling and interior trim. Student just completed a handrail on the Shelbyville Cultural Trail System for the City and are getting ready for Library /Food Pantry Boxes and a mini barn for a customer.

Today's CTE spotlight is past alumni Bryan Rosales who was a 2008-2009 Auto Body Collision Repair student. BRCP helped me to pursue and further my interest and education in the automotive collision field. For advice, I would say that teenage distractions are a waste. Don't get stuck in the moment. Focus on bigger and better aspirations that will better yourself in life. Adulting smacks you hard in the face, so it's best to be prepared. Do your part to be a productive citizen.

Blue River Career Programs will be on a 2 hour delay today, Thursday, February 20, 2025. There will be no AM session and the Welding field trip has been canceled.

Today's CTE spotlight is our Health Sciences CCMA program Jayden Richards is currently enrolled in Health Science Capstone. Jayden says, “I chose Blue River Career Programs to follow my dreams to work in the medical field. My mother is a medical assistant, and she is my inspiration. I currently work as a Certified Nurse Assistant, I’m enrolled in the medical assisting program, and I plan to continue my education in health care after high school. My communication skills are a strong asset I have developed through my clinical experiences at Blue River. I’m still learning how to manage multiple tasks at once, but this learning environment allows me to critically think and determine what’s the most to least important tasks. I have learned that working with people is more than just taking care of them. I do not stress with residents or patients if they need further explanation of the care I’m providing. I know that this is a family member of someone who needs me to help them, and that’s what I’m here to do.” The Health Science Capstone offers students an opportunity to earn dual credit courses through Ivy Tech and obtain a certification as a Clinical Medical Assistant. This is a one-year program open to juniors or seniors.

This afternoon, seven of our Work Based Learning students had the opportunity to speak to various business leaders throughout the community about their experiences in WBL and their plans for the future.

The CTE spotlight is past alumni Dillon Lochard-Patel, a 2008-2009 Automotive Program student BRCP and Mr. Allen guided me as a lost kid and encouraged me to a pathway that put me into my current career. I would say to keep working hard and understand the meaning of grit. This will take you a long way.

Our Blue River Career Programs HOSA blood drive is this Friday, February 21, 2025, from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Blue River Career Programs conference room . See the attached flyer for more information.

We are one week away from our 2024 BRCP Open House on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 5:00-6:30 PM. We hope to see all current and future BRCP students. There will be 16 different vendors present and classrooms will be open for everyone.
